Like every country, China Japan, and Korea all have different kinds of art that appeal to the modern population of each country. Throughout the years, the art of the different countries have affected each other and the world. Ever since ancient times, people have been drawn to the art of East Asia. They reflected the history of the people and the beauty of the land. Even the British came to China for their pottery and Japan for their silk tapestries. Now, like the world, the arts have expanded in East Asia. They have taken the movie, art, and cartoon industry by storm. Through different mediums, the countries continue to express and share what entertainment and art means to them.

Art to people may just be drawings or paintings, but they include anyway that a person expresses themselves. In this case, music, cinema, and canvas work are all forms of art.
-Canvas Work- Many of the Chinese artists have approached the medium of the brush. Many of them use a canvas for their art. Art is an extremely free idea that one can express their own ideas in. Throughout the years however, China has been very restricting on the idea of human rights. Especially after the Tienanmen Square incident in 1989, the Chinese government has arrested half a million people without charge (1). If the government suspects that the person is doing something to speak out about what he or she thinks, they silence them. Because artists are people who are famous, they can influence the public. Often through things like writing, the writer can express what they feel and if they feel strongly about human rights, it is reflected in their writing. It is dangerous for people in China to pursue such careers. Although the art may include some sort of idea about human rights, they are free for interpretation making it safer for the artist. Some artists have been arrested in the past like Ai Wei Wei (2) but not that many. Many believe, while many argue, that art is the freest medium in China (5).
Throughout the years, art in China has developed. Starting with common graffiti art to elaborate paintings, China is filled with art. Graffiti art was influenced by the west, in places like Philadelphia. The graffiti that people commonly think of is similar to the graffiti that was first created in Philadelphia, which was used for political reasons in the 1960s (4). From that time, graffiti has developed into artwork in Beijing. Graffiti has now transformed into something that is related of the aesthetics of the lives of people and fashion (5). It has turned away from political aspect of graffiti because there is still that fear in the artists of the government (5). There are millions of underground markets for artists. Although there are so many talented artists, there are very few galleries where they can exhibit their works (5). They had huge underground markets and exhibitions in the 1990s as things weren't fully accepted. Nowadays, art has come out into the public as there are now the Beijing International Art Biennial. Because the art industry just started to grow and accepted in Beijing, there are not that many places that artists can show off their work, therefore they do not have that much money. They sometimes combine their money and rent a warehouse to work in (5). Sometimes, in China, being an artist can be difficult.
China's work continues to expand. While that happens, the one of the SARs of China, Hong Kong has already developed so much, even into the world market. Martial Arts has made Hong Kong part of the movie industry as they incorporate the martial arts techniques into the movies. People find it fun to watch and action packed. The first Asian stars in Hollywood were Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, both legends to the martial arts world. Artists such as Christie have made records in art auctions. In the latest auction, with every bid, the price was raised by one million won (1억). Every year, Christie sets new records in the art field (2). Christie is famous for mixing the style of old Chinese art with the idea of contemporary art.

-Manga- Manga is the collection different comic book series of Japan. In all manga books, there is a hero, like the hero in American comic books. However, a key difference in American comic books and manga is that manga is for the general public while comic books are aimed towards young children. Manga has become such a big industry in Japan. It gives people jobs and also entertainment (8). Manga has even developed into magazines that people read. The kind of drawings and writing in manga make it enjoyable for all ages. The draws tend to be someone with big eyes and a thin chin. They draw it as someone with the ideal looks that people want (7).
Manga has been around Japan for a long period of time. It gives a uniqueness to Japan and because it's so old, it might be considered as a part of the culture to others. In manga, many of the scenes are at school. The protagonists are there through the series and the reader sees the character grow throughout the series. It helps the reader really understand who the character is and helps them look up to them as a hero. Unlike American comics, where it's just events where the super hero saves the day, manga highlights the highs and lows of the protagonist's life and how they are able to overcome all of their mistakes. Anime is a small cartoon that has developed off of manga. With the same stereotype of big eyes and thin faces, anime cartoons all look similar. They are popular and got popular after people stopped reading books and watching television even more. Naruto, Death Note, and Bleach are only a few of the ones that have spread all around the world. The cartoons are "cute" and many of the settings of cartoons are in places similar to Japan. Nowadays, many kids are influenced by the Japanese culture just by watching television and without even knowing about it.

-Cinema and Music- Like in other countries, many of the youth or people in general look up to the celebrities as role models. Korea, being a small state that has recently gained their independence back from Japan is just starting to progress. through the years, Korea has developed in the movie-making industry and music. Within years, Korea has grown, entering the world industry.
For cinema, both movies and dramas have evolved. Many people look to these for entertainment and also trends. The clothes that the main character wears, the words that they say often become a trend within the people. For example, after the main character of "Secret Garden" wore a sparkling blue sweat suit, people started to wear them in public. Most student, when they are at home, watch drama and talk about it as the latest gossip.
As for flim, like movies, it is one of the fastest developing industries in Korea. In the 1990s, people, called choebols, invested money into the flim industry. The flim industry boomed as companies such as Samsung and Daewoo helped int he distribution of films (3). Before this time, Korea was unable to develop due to Japanese imperialism and the Korean War. Now, at theaters, they have international movies, including the animations that were re-voiced by Korean celebrities. Movies are one of the most common ways of entertainment in Korea now. Many of the movies, like 국가대표 also reflect Korean pride and nationalism within the country.
Because there are only a few entertainment industries in Korea, every actor or singer is a celebrity. It is not uncommon for a Korean student to know every single member of numerous music groups. Through this, a movie gets better publicity as well. Knowing that an actor you know is in the movie or drama, one wants to watch the movie even more. Often in movies or dramas, they have cameos as well, of famous celebrities, hoping that the ratings for that day or the box office will rise.
Music is also a big thing in Korea. Many teenagers use music to get rid of stress. It is not weird to see that a nation like Korea, with the highest stress level in the world, has much interest in music. Music tries to appeal to the different students in Korea. It often is separated into two groups: ballad and dance. Ballad is the soft yet powerful song, filled with emotion. Dance songs are popular as it catches people's eyes. For the groups that often perform the dance numbers, they have people that are good looking rather than better singers so that people are more interested at watching the dance at concerts, not listening to them on their iPods. These days, the music industry has gone more to the techno music side. There isn't much music that is acoustic anymore. It tries to grab the people's attention with the cool beats and unique rhythm.

The Host, a Korea movie, broke the box office record for Korean movies with 10 million viewers in less than 3 weeks (6). Korean stars such as Rain (비) and Lee Byung Hun (이병현) have been featured in American movies such as The Ninja Assassin and G.I Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. Also, many of the martial arts stars, such as Jackie Chan, have become Hollywood stars. They are featured on shows like The Ellen Degeneres Show, which is a talk show for celebrities. In movies such as Around the World in 80 Days, Jackie Chan himself was the choreographer for all the martial arts moves.

Many of the manga in Japan has also been changed into famous Korean dramas like Boys Before Flowers and City Hunter. As for the Chinese, they continue to hold auctions. Recently, a famous artist named Christie of Hong Kong has also grabbed the attention of the world, with record breaking auction bids. Many people in different nations are moving their attention over to Asia.

In some areas, I contributed my own thoughts on how the things were changing. I think that especially in the Korean section, I was able to do so because I see that happening everywhere around school. The reason I chose this topic is because it showed really how faster development is in Asia. I was able to show that even through the tough times, the industries survived and became one of the top in the world. Many people don't notice that the industries that we see today weren't here 50 years ago, or even 20 years ago. I tried to emphasize the rapidness of growth.
How successful do you think you conveyed your research to your audience? I was able to show how much the world has changed. The only one that really didn't show change was Japan. China was so limited because of human rights while Korea couldn't develop because of imperialism. In such a short time, everything just boomed. Korea has one of the most successful movie and music industries in the entire world. Through the video, it shows how even Asian people are starting to enter Hollywood. All of the images are used to show how they are in today's world. Even the moving cartoon in the Japanese area is a popular cartoon today. Hopefully, in the end, the reader can understand the strenght of Asian influence.
What would have made your presentation more successful? I think that I lacked some visual presentation at a certain point. I tried my best to add in as many photos and images as possible. I think that the information was all there but since some of the ideas were my own, some people might not understand where I'm coming from or disagree with what I have to say.
How successful do you think your technology-based materials were in conveying your research? I think that my technology-based materials helped me convey my research quite well. It helped me keep my audience's attention while showing how much the countries have developed and changed. That was the main point that I wanted to get across.

I think if there were more videos that would show this. I think that one negative part of this kind of topic is that it hasn't been around for very long. Nobody has really seen the change in it yet.

I never really understood how fast everything happened and how government can affect everything so much. Through this project, it really showed me the similarities in art in Asia but it also showed me how everything was so different. In China, art isn't something that is really free and in Korea, it's limited because it just started. I think that with my project, it just helped me recognize how important the growing industries are to a country and I hope that the industries continue to grow. Asian influence truly is amazing.
